Yesterday was the first time I read about NFTs (non-fungible tokens). It feels very similar to the early days of cryptocurrencies: speculation, hype, potential... but actually just a sexy name on a technical protocol. And like for cryptocurrencies, they will keep doing their own thing for a couple of years, gain traction and attention. And like for cryptocurrencies, it's hard to tell where this is going. Two years from now? I can see NFTs being used by a wide number of art dealers (and even museums), but only first as a way to keep better track of physical pieces of art (because the technical solution makes sense, as it helps certifying the uniqueness of anything). And then, maybe, as a way to trade digital art. Note for myself: go re-read Walter Benjamin's essay called "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction".
